NV Motorcycle Safety ASM Study Grants

Beginning Oct 1, 2022, a joint effort has been launched to study the effects of Accident Scene Management Training within the motorcycling community. A community grant has been issued to train, equip, and study the effects of trained bystanders who respond to a motorcycle crash.

The Nevada office of Transportation Safety (with the Nevada Rider Program) and Road Guardians have teamed up to train and equip 200 riders in the Las Vegas and the Reno areas where motorcycle crashes are most prevalent. This focused effort will help get more trained riders out on the roadways. While anyone interested can take the class, our efforts to recruit students will be focused on riders who support group rides and events such as Road Captains or “Sweep” riders. We will also aim to train leaders in the motorcycle community who can then encourage their riders to complete training. Each student will receive a “Sport” trauma kit with their class to increase the effectiveness of their response in the event they use their knowledge to help an injured rider. The contents of the kit will be focused on the most important items needed to help at a scene. The value of each class with a trauma kit is $149.00. In some cases, we have partnered with other safety advocates. In the Las Vegas area, Full Throttle Law will provide free breakfast, lunch, and a one-month free Biker Down membership.

Students will be asked to pay $25 each to take the class and will be asked to complete pre-class and post-class surveys. Students attending these NV DOT grant-sponsored classes will agree to complete follow-up surveys that will be sent to students six months and twelve months after they are trained to determine if any of their skills were used. Results will be reported to NV DOT and published for the motorcycle community. Partnerships: We will partner with existing organizations involved with training, such as Biker Down NV and MATTRS.
