Craig Wix, FF/EMT – Lead Instructor and Lisa Marks, EMT – Lead Instructor

Craig has been a Professional Firefighter/EMT with the Parkersburg Fire Department for the past 15 years. He currently serves in the position of Lieutenant and is qualified as a HazMat Tech. He works part time as an EMT for both two local hospital ambulance services. Prior to transferring to the fire department, Craig spent a year as a police officer. Craig’s motorcycle interest began as he grew up in Hawaii and watched his father do club roadracing on bikes as varied as Yamahas, Hondas, and Triumphs, but didn’t get his first motorcycle, a new 1999 Ducati Supersport, until he was 29. After taking the bike through 9 states and putting 35,000 miles on the Supersport (that’s a million in Ducati miles!), his stable has expanded to include a 2008 Ducati 848. He’s a member of Ducati Owners Club of the US and US Desmo. Lisa has been an EMT for the past 6 years and works for a local ambulance service. Lisa was introduced to motorcycles when she started seeing Craig about a year and a half ago. She has enjoyed being a passenger so much that she hopes to learn to ride and get her own Ducati Monster. Lisa is a CPR and PEPP instructor and is currently enrolled in paramedic class in hopes of getting her medic license in June of this year. Craig originally certified as an instructor with ASMI in 2004, but decided to recertify with his fiancé, Lisa, to get back into the program with a fresh start. Craig and Lisa are getting married in June and their honeymoon plans include a trip to Italy, and yes….. the Ducati factory is a planned stop!

I am 53 yrs young and as some would say a “Probie” or “New Kid” as I came late to riding. As an RN for 29 years working in ICU, ER, & Operating Rooms around California &Washington, motorcyclists were known as ‘Donor cycles”. So it was with much trepidation I made the decision to learn to ride when I relocated to an area that made it a financial benefit. I failed my first MSF class (from fear) but had a motorcycle waiting for me in my garage (my Baby Girl an’06 Heritage Softail). Needless to say a learner’s permit, 5 hour riding class, and another skill test later I was an official licensed motorcyclists! And I haven’t looked back! My only regret is that in starting so late I have missed tons of riding opportunities. I now have 3 yrs & change of riding under my belt (61,000 mi) and look forward to riding everyday. I am taking a more active role by membership in American Motorcycling Assoc., my National HOG org. as well as my local HOG & LOH chapter’s (Puget Sound). I am also renewing my ACLS certification. I have spent 15+ years as a preceptor teaching students how to function and think in critical settings. I was introduced to ASMI @ the Women’s Conference in Keystone, CO. summer 2009 (absolutely awe inspiring) I was excited to learn how to incorporate this teaching skill into my Love of Riding. One of my sayings is: Knowledge is a free gift and we can never receive enough gifts. So Take it and Ruuun with it !!!

Denise currently owns a 2008 H-D Ultra Classic and a 2006 Big Bear 300 Sled. Denise was introduced to ASMI at a seminar session at the 2006 AMA/FIM Women and Motorcycling Conference in Georgia. She met with Vicki after the seminar to sign up for a class only to discover there were no instructors in Texas . . . at the time . . . She was soon convinced that this would be her niche in the motorcycle community and a way to give something back to her fellow motorcyclists. She is passionate about the fact that all motorcyclists need to know how to take care of EACH OTHER out on the roads we so love to travel. “We CAN make a difference”.

Darleen Cherry – Assistant Instructor
Last modified on 2011-12-29 17:39:05 GMT. 0 comments. Top.
Hi, I’m Darleen Cherry from San Antonio, Texas. I was first introduced to the joy of riding motorcycles in 1981 at the age of 33. I was taught how to ride at a motorcycle rally on a Kawasaki 1300. (My husband had to ride in the passenger seat because I couldn’t reach the ground when I came to a stop.) After that weekend, I was hooked. By the following Friday, I had obtained my motorcycle endorsement, bought a slightly modified Honda 250 and made my first solo run from Lake Charles, La. to San Antonio, Tx. I joined the Sandy Oaks Volunteer Fire Department in 1997. In April 2000, I obtained my pre-hospital trauma medical certification (ECA) from the Texas Department of State Health Services. I served my community in South Bexar County as both a volunteer firefighter and medic until retirement in February 2009. I am a member of the American Legion Riders Post 593, Southern Cruisers’ Riding Club and TMRA. I currently ride a Yamaha 650 V-Star. If you are interested in hosting a class for riders in your area, no matter where your area is located, contact me. I’d be delighted to work with you. My email is CPR-ASMI@att.net

Hello, I’m Jeff (Jeffer) Crotzer. I’ve been riding motorcycles in the DFW Texas area off and on since 1973. When helmets were mandatory and seatbelts were not. I started off just trail riding on my Yamaha mini Enduro, and moved on to ride amateur motocross and flat track briefly on a friend’s bike in 1975. I bought my first street bike, a shaft driven Honda CB 900 in 1978. I bought my first Harley at the end of 2006, a 2007 Softail Custom that didn’t tour very well for me, so I purchased a 2009 Ultra Classic which I still have today. I am a member of North Texas HOG where I am a Road Captain and the Safety Officer. I am also a member of ABATE, MRF, AMA, and a Certified Road Guardian.I’ve been living in the DFW area since 1968 and have had mainly automotive jobs (Technician, Wrecker Driver, and Service Manager). I took a six year break from automotive work and became a Police Officer for two different police departments. Two of those years I worked as a accident investigator. I am now an Amsoil dealer in the DFW area. I enjoy riding in groups more than alone, which is why I decided that I wanted to become an instructor with ASMI. This is education that’s better to have and not need, rather than need and not have. If you’re interested in a class for your group in the DFW area, I can be contacted at jeff@crotzer.com See ya on the road.

I have my Basic and Advanced Motorcycle certifications through MSF and I am a member of the MRF, North Texas HOG/LOH, Texas ABATE Confederation, and AMA. I have been a registered nurse for 22 years with my early beginnings as an EMT and then a mobile intensive care transport medic for 911 in San Diego, California. The combination of Nursing and Paramedicine lead to my becoming a Flight Nurse. I am currently employed as a Flight Nurse with 10 years of critical care air ambulance experience and a professional membership in the Air &Surface Transport Nurses Association. I have a Master’s degree in Nursing specializing in Nursing Education with teaching and certifications in Basic CPR, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and critical care. In the past, I have worked for NASA as a researcher, authored journal papers and developed a Drivers Safety Course for the United States Air Force. My career is set in safety and safety education so teaching for ASMI is a perfect match for me. I like that ASMI is unique to motorcycling. I believe it is important to be safe and to have the knowledge to manage an accident scene from a rider’s point of view. It is our responsibility to watch out for each other. I want to be a part of that. See you in class! Contact: Jovimedic@aol.com
Darlene Hanson, RRT – Lead Instructor

Darlene worked in the Respiratory Care field in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area for 15 years where she focused on children, and then became involved in the world of wound care where she has practiced for the last 10 years. Darlene got her first taste of motorcycling on a mini bike at age 12 and has been hooked ever since. She finally got her very own bike in 2004, quickly moving up to her 2006 Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic ‘The Rose”. Handling such a large bike had her quickly looking to other women to for support and help, which she found in the ladies of the Chrome Angels, an all-women motorcycle social riding organization dedicated to helping women and children. Darlene is now the Co-Director of the Chrome Angels. She puts 8,000 – 10,000 miles a year on her bike between charity work and riding with her boyfriend. Darlene totally believes that the more we know, the safer we can ride. This is what led to her interest in ASMI in the spring of 2010. Darlene took her basic class and was so impressed that she signed up for the advanced class during the lunch break. She then followed up with instructor training in September 2010 and looks forward to sharing this knowledge with all riders!

I have been riding motorcycles since I was very young. I live by the motto Live to Ride, Ride to Live. It is a true passion of mine. I am a volunteer at the Port Bolivar Fire, EMS department. I enjoy being a volunteer and love working in a community that has gone through so much with the devastation of hurricane Ike. Being part of the solution is always a great feeling. I am also the president of the EMS Angels MC Gulf Coast Chapter 17 club. Where our motto is Live, Teach, Ride and that is what we do. Part of that is teaching teenage drivers about motorcycle awareness to prevent accidents with a motorcycle, so they never have to live with the thought of seriously hurting or killing a motorcyclist. I am planning on furthering my education and becoming a EMT-I and CPR, AED instructor. If you are interested in hosting a class in your area please feel free to contact me at herkamerk@gmail.com or by phone at 832-244-1655.

Gerald Hensley, OD, MPH, PhD, DSP – Lead Instructor and Patricia Hensley, MS, EdS, DSP – Assistant Instructor

My motorcycling activity began in 1958 with daily riding of a German Zundapp racing bike which progressed to a BSA Lightning and then to a HD Sportster by the early 1960s. Riding became less frequent during my college years, and I sold my bike before I graduated in 1969 with my professional clinical doctorate followed by a residency in pediatric vision care. Time became even more restricted in the early 1970s while I helped to establish a large comprehensive health center in the Midwest at which I eventually became the Assistant Director of Health Services in addition to providing clinical patient care. During this time period, however, I learned to fly and bought an airplane which I soon learned was far more costly than any motorcycle. Careers evolve, and my aviation interest led me to join the Air Force in 1976. I was commissioned in the medical service, and, before I knew it, I was back in school pursuing post-doctoral graduate degrees in both health/hospital administration as well as epidemiology. Later, I completed another academic doctorate concentrating in vision research. Before I retired from the Air Force in 2002, I had functioned in a number of areas including: a deputy clinic commander; coordinator of trauma care exercises; epidemiological investigator for accidents/health care ; researcher in pilot vision; and, of course, provider of clinical services. I would visit various motorcycle dealerships for “demo” rides during this time, but I did not own a bike. Motorcycling is considered one of the most unsafe due to a lack of visibility by other vehicles. In order to help minimize this situation, we ordered our new HD 1200 Sportster Roadster in bright “Yellow Pearl. Matching colored bags and side panels over the battery/oil reservoir were also ordered. In addition, a “gradient yellow” windshield, two additional flashing headlights and an air horn were added. We also wear matching yellow full-face helmets and yellow leather jackets. We definitely want to be “seen and heard” “.It is our feeling that both flying and motorcycling are similar: both demand specialized training and an acknowledged responsibility by the pilot/rider in order to fully realize the freedom which both enable the participant to enjoy. The ASMI program offers unique information which allows the rider to not only be better responsible for him/herself, but, more importantly, may contribute to the increased welfare of his/her fellow riders and the general motorcycling community.

Steve served in the US Army Special Forces (Green Beret) and has basic and advanced First Aid and CPR certifications. He is a member of the Cape Fear HOG Chapter and CBA/ABATE.
Steve has been a biker for 30 years and currently rides a 2005 Road King Custom and 2008 Screaming Eagle Ultra. Steve is the Safety Officer and Head Road Captain for his HOG chapter. After being on the “receiving end” of a hit-n-run, his understanding and passion for safety only intensified. Being able to instruct others on what to do “just in case” of an accident is his way of giving back to the biker community and to help someone else in need.

Having been around the fire service since his dad was a fire chief and EMT back in the 70′s John learned early on the importance of “Knowing what to do”. Having been an EMT and Paramedic since the early 90′s, most of what he has encountered was completely preventable. He became a motorcycling instructor to help put himself out of business as a paramedic. His ultimate goal is for you to NEVER use the first aid skills or collision avoidance techniques he teaches, but statistics show that this is not reality. Therefore, we must all become part of the solution. TRAINING is the BEST accessory you can buy for your bike and your life! John and his mother operate Capital Area Motorcycling School, Inc. in Troy, NY which trains nearly 1300 students each year in basic, intermediate and advanced riding. He is an MSF RiderCoach and ScooterCoach, Total Control ARC instructor, EVOC instructor and USCA Curling Instructor. Besides his family, his vices are trackdays and curling.

I have served the veterinary pharmaceutical and animal health industries in sales and marketing for many years. I bought my first Harley in 2008, and currently ride a 2009 Harley Road Glide. I truly enjoy touring, and look forward to many more 15,000+ summers. I am a road captain with one of the largest church based motorcycle groups in the country, The Crossing Riders, which is based in Chesterfield MO. I am also a Certified Road Guardian and a Rescue Rider. I am passionate about motorcycle safety and rescue, as I often ride sweep behind 8 to 80 motorcycle riders, most of them my friends, or PGR riders. Shortly after completing my ASMI Advanced course in Austin TX, I experienced my first motorcycle accident where I was first on scene, and found the training to be critical. I hope that as an Assistant ASMI Instructor I can help foster learning and skill development that will help save lives at any accident scene. Virginia Phillips, RN – Lead Instructor
Last modified on 2011-12-29 17:37:19 GMT. 0 comments. Top.
Virginia has been around motorcycles most of her life beginning with her handsome husband of 30 years riding a Honda 750 starting before they were married. Besides riding with Steve for many years she also had experiences riding her own dirt bike. After raising two children, a Physicist and future Pharmacist, Virginia became a nurse in 1997. She has worked in hospitals as LPN and later became an RN. She mostly enjoys home health care for elderly and pediatric patients. For ten years she has volunteered with the American Red Cross regularly. She became bored riding behind Steve on their Electra-glide so in 2001 she brought home her own Heritage Classic that she has customized just for her. Its name is White Shadow. Early riding began by taking a MSF Basic course and practicing around town. Then the advanced course, what a confidence builder. Practice and confidence has led to several touring rides through many states and memorable adventures. Virginia belongs to H.O.G. and has served as the Ladies of Harley officer in her local chapter. Since 2000 she also operates her leather sewing business, Grace Specialties Inc., and uses her creative talents to embellish, repair and manufacture leather garments for bikers. ”I agree that the need to present Accident Scene Management training is more urgent now than ever. The average age of the motorcyclist is rising. The injury and fatality rate among motorcyclist is increasing. Public awareness of motorcycling is increasing as well. We are willing to travel to train people to help each other. People usually don’t care what you know until they know that you care, and we both care about people”.

My first motorcycle experience was a dirt bike that I could never seem to get enough of. My father owned a 175 which I always seemed a passenger of. The first bike I personally owned was a 1979 Honda CB750K. I drove it daily until one day I blew out 3rd gear and then we had kids. I looked around for years for something that I wanted and found a 1985 Honda Goldwing GL1200 Aspencade. In my first full year I put over 10,000 miles on it going back and forth to work including a few day trips and group rides. I currently belong to our church’s riding group of over 400 riders and participate in the Patriot Guard. I attended my first ERC training this summer, which I highly recommend to all riders. My wife and my youngest daughter ride with me frequently.
I’ve been a paramedic for over 25 years. My most recent experience was in a high volume area as a supervisor. I have treated several patients of motorcycle accidents over the years. All of these were the result of speed and/or the negotiation of a turn. I have been a CPR instructor for most of my career and an instructor for other EMS programs including adjunct faculty for EMTs. I was introduced to motorcycles by my father at 3 years old, I have loved them ever since. When he would take me to school on his motorcycle I was always saying, “DADDY GO FASTER”, this lasted my entire life.
Over 20 years ago my husband, and best friend bought my first bike, a Honda 250. He is an awesome teacher. In no time I needed a bigger bike, I told him I was tired of shifting 2 to his 1 to keep up on my little bike.
In 1996 he asked what I wanted for Christmas, I thought about it for 2 seconds and replied,”Road Race Lessons”. I had to wait till July for my present, but it was well worth the wait. One week after class we were on our way to Chicago to buy my first race bike. I raced for three years, and became the first woman expert road racer in Michigan. It was the experience of a lifetime. My husband was my wrench, he always taught me that the most important things were to ride safe, and finish the race. I did have my share of spills though. There is a saying amongst racers, “If your not crashing you are not racing”. I must have been racing. During the 3 years of making the circuit with the Great Lakes Road Racing Association, I managed to cover 8,000 miles while negotiating 65,000 turns at an average speed of 75 mph. I missed judged 8 turns, which resulted in 4 concussions, turning my spine backwards, breaking one finger, one foot and a finger nail.
After our 4 kids grew up and left the nest, we decided it was time to take our life long trip. This was to ride our bikes cross-country. We bought are cruisers and off we went. It was an incredible adventure; we still have 3 states left to see.
I belong to the Women on Wheels Free Spirit Chapter of Michigan. I was introduced Bystander Assistance at a seminar given by my fellow members and friends Tammie and Ann, who are also Instructors here in Michigan. I was so impressed with the information that was being given, I decided to become and EMT and take the instructor training as well, so I could help get this most valuable information out to more bikers. During our trip there were areas that we didn’t see a car on the road for 2 or more hours, what would we have done? Cell phone service, forget it. This is the reason I am so excited to have the opportunity to help make a difference.
I can be contacted by calling 313-702-4116 or e mail Ms38cal@hotmail.com.

I started my fire service career in 1989 after growing up around the local fire department (born and raised in Southampton, MA). I have simultaneously served on as many as three Fire Departments that also provide ambulance service. I have worked with Paramedics as a basic EMT as well as, and mostly as an Intermediate. I worked my way from FF to training officer to Chief on the town’s call department. I have earned at least one certification a year throughout my career and continue at that pace. Currently I am a shift officer (Lt.) at the 104 FW Air National Guard Base in Westfield, MA; I started there in 1994. I have also served with both the Army Reserve and Air National Guard.
I started riding dirt bikes as a kid and transition to street bikes several years out of high school. My first was a 1985 Honda Interceptor. Then graduated to a H-D Sporty; now I ride a 2002 H-D Fatboy.
I think adding ASMI instruction will be an interesting fulfilling new direction. You can contact me at hoglt7@aol.com.

Lieutenant (Ret.) James P. Kelley, M.A. – Lead Instructor
Last modified on 2011-12-29 17:34:17 GMT. 0 comments. Top.
Jim got his start as an EMT back in the early 1980’s, when “you could still get blood on you and not worry about it”. On his first night as an Ambulance EMT, on his very first call, he delivered a baby. “It was like going to a casino for the first time and hitting the big jackpot” he says. “But, nobody likes a rookie with a stork pin on his shirt!”. Later, as a patrolman in the Boston Police Department, he handled two more childbirth calls, delivering the babies before the ambulance arrived, and giving him a “hat trick” for emergency deliveries. When assigned to the motorcycle unit, he escorted presidents and dignitaries from around the world. “The fastest I ever rode was on the motorcade for Prince Charles…those Jaguar limousines really move. I had an old AMF Harley, and could barely keep up…I thought it was going to come apart!”
As a sergeant, Jim was assigned to the Operations Division, where he oversaw call intake and dispatch at Boston 911. He became a nationally certified call handling trainer, and worked on the implementation of Enhanced 911 in Massachusetts, in addition to training outside departments as a consultant for Holdsworth & Associates, a nationally recognized firm. As a lieutenant, he served as a shift commander in Boston’s downtown district, and as a staff member at the Boston Police Academy before retiring in 2003.
Since retiring, Jim has continued his consulting work and has been employed in the private sector. A lifelong skier, in 2007 he realized a childhood dream and became a member of the National Ski Patrol as an Outdoor Emergency Care Technician, volunteering at Sugarbush, Vermont. He has since become an OEC Instructor and trainer. Jim and his wife Cathy are active in the Cape Cod chapter of the Harley Owners Group, and are both members of the MA chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders.
Jim continues to bring his sense of humor whenever he teaches a class, because “trainers who lack a sense of humor, especially about themselves, never get invited back…and they shouldn’t!” Jim is the founder of Fathers Of The Brave, a support organization and charity for the fathers of American military personnel. He is the father of an Army combat medic, a Navy helicopter pilot, and a daughter who, he is convinced, will succeed at whatever she chooses to do “by sheer force of will”.
Jim is available for classes in Massachusetts, and on an occasional basis in Vermont. He may be reached at 508-360-3611 or at jim@fathersofthebrave.org

Jeri started riding motorcycles as a toddler on the back of her dad’s 1970 883 Sportster that he still has today. Much to her dad’s dismay, she got her motorcycle license in June of 2006 on a 250 Suzuki and bought a 1200 Harley Sportster of her own the following month! Jeri is a Registered Nurse and Certified Wound Care Specialist for the Southern Maine Medical Center Visiting Nurses. She started her nursing career in 2002 on a Cardiac Telemetry floor where she was BLS and ACLS certified. She has been a Case Manager for the last 7 years and has been certified in wound care for 3 years. She currently provides continuing education in wound care to her staff and serves as a Wound Resource Nurse/Consult for difficult and hard to manage wound cases. Last year she was the recipient of the “Excellence in Community Care” award voted on by her peers for outstanding and exemplary communication skills, promoting a positive nursing image, role modeling of a professional nurse practice and mentoring team behaviors. Jeri has been a member of the Maine-ly Angels chapter of Women on Wheels and has been their safety director since the group started 4 years ago. When she heard about the Accident Scene Management course and learned that she could become an instructor as well, she was thrilled at the opportunity to be able to combine her love for teaching others and her dedication to safety into this role. Jeri currently resides on a 22 acre farm in Dayton, Maine with her fiancé and two children. They have 19 horses that they use to conduct guided trail rides and their next endeavor is to become members of the Maine Mounted Search and Rescue Unit. Jeri can be reached at jerilyn311@gmail.com.

I started riding at around age 10. Since then I only went one summer without a bike. What a long summer!!!! I think that riding is a way of life for some. I joined the fire department in my hometown in the middle 1990s. I soon realized that EMS was what I enjoyed so I started as a first responder in 1993 and got my EMT certification in 1995.
I am a Motorcycle Rider Education Instructor for ABATE of Iowa for 8 years I also do share the presentations for abate of Iowa. Sometimes I get asked why I do all the things I do for motorcycling. I believe that if you can prevent one accident or help one person save a life then you have done something good with your life. You can contact me to set up a class at jasmith00@hotmail.com.

. I have had the opportunity in those many years to help out fellow bikers on occasion. Steve, has been riding since he sneaked his Dad’s Shrines “Tin Lizzy” out of his family’s garage, at age 6. That was over 50 years ago. If it moves, he has flown it, ridden it, steered it, or branded it. His current ride is a 2006 Harley Heritage Classic, with some of the fun bells and whistles. When Steve is not out riding or saving the world, he can be seen with his Golden Retriever, Dylan, out walking and enjoying a fine cigar.
Steve, returned to school for upgraded education and received his EMT license from the State of Illinois in 2007. He has volunteered in over 300 charity motorcycle rides for children and American Soldier benefits in the past years. In 2010 Steve received his Instructors Certification from American Heart Association and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. I have always loved the wind in my face. I received both IDOT and H-D Riders Edge training, and purchased a sweet H-D Softtail Deluxe, ’06. I met “Trauma Mama”, Teresa McClelland, of the Rescue Riders and Vicki Sanfelipo of ASMI and the Road Guardians at the Chicago Bike Show and the rest is history. From my first ride or “mission” with the Rescue Riders group I was hooked. The idea to “ride 4 a reason” suited me perfectly. I have been a nurse for 32 years working in critical care, cardiac care, emergency and administrative areas in urban Chicago. To be able to help someone in need is a gift and to be able train others who want to learn to do the same thing is what I want to do. I look forward to spreading the knowledge and enthusiasm I have for care and safety in biking. Chicago is a great city for Blues, Jazz and beautiful rides. Come and check it out in the best way – on 2 wheels. See you out there! Contact me at: msummers5855@gmail.com.

I have been riding motorcycles since I was a young child. My first Harley Davidson motorcycle was a 2005 Softail Deuce and I also ride a 2008 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. I am a member of the HOG organization and Founder, Founding President and current member of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club (BSMC) Jackson, TN.
I currently serve as a soldier on active duty military for 20+ years with several deployments to combat zones to include Desert Shield/Desert Storm where I had my first experience as first responder to traumatic injuries. Other deployments include Operation Restore Hope, Somalia and two deployments to Operation IRAQI Freedom where I was recognized for aiding and assisting wounded nationals as the result of a deadly night indirect fire attack. Continuing education with the Army Combat Life Saver Course (CLS) program made this possible.
As the Senior Military Science Instructor at the University of Tennessee, Martin I developed and managed the military motorcycle mentorship program for the ROTC program at the college. While in West Tennessee I Orchestrated the first Ezra Howard Ride to honor WWII Veteran Ezra Howard who fought with the all-famous black 92nd Infantry Division known as the “Buffalo Soldiers”. Thanks to three counties and the support of local officials and police escorts, over 250 motorcycle riders rode over 65 miles with no incidents.

Jean Herndon, NREMT-I – Lead Instructor and Phil Herndon – Assistant Instructor
Last modified on 2011-12-29 17:34:18 GMT. 0 comments. Top.
Jean Herndon, NREMT-I – Lead Instructor
Jean was a motorcycle rider for many years before taking an extended break to raise her son. She received her endorsement when Maryland first required separate licensing; no written test was involved but a road test was required, in this case, in a December snow “event” in Silver Spring, Maryland. (Note: The examiner returned to the DMV building saying something like, “If you get back here in one piece, you’ll pass.”). Jean got Phil interested in motorcycling when they had an opportunity to check out all of the 2003 models while volunteering with MDA on the H-D Centennial Tour. They liked the Road King best so, one week after her son stopped by their house on a new 2003 Sportster, she convinced Phil they should purchase a 2003 Black and Silver Road King Classic.
Jean has been a First Aid and Medical Emergency Response Team volunteer for over 25 years and an ASHI-Certified First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor for over six years. She volunteered as an ASMI Course Assistant and then certified as an Assistant Instructor. In 2008, she completed the EMT-Intermediate program through North Metro, now Chattahoochee, Technical College and passed her National Boards to advance from an Assistant Instructor to Lead Instructor for ASMI. Jean is licensed to practice in Georgia.
Jean has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Education, serving her Senior Internship as an Ensign with the U.S. Public Health Service, CDC, TB Unit Training Department. Her career has spanned a wide range of professions, from Social Worker to Business School Instructor and later, from Data Processing Technical Writer/Editor to Computer Technician. Jean is now retired after 20 years with AT&T in Data Processing Centers, where she met and married Phil.
Phil Herndon – Assistant Instructor
Phil has been riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles since 2003 after completion of the MSF program. He has twice completed the Experienced Rider Course. He, as well as Jean, has been involved in ASMI instruction since 2004 as a Course Assistant and Assistant Instructor. He says he “serves as ‘pack mule’ and technology expert for Jean in our safety-based training center, North Georgia Biker Safety.” Phil is an active member of the Cartersville Georgia HOG Chapter and Cherokee County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). He has been employed full time with AT&T for over 25 years; he is currently an IT Metrics Analyst. The Road King now shares space with Phil’s 2008 Road Glide and Jean’s 2008 Electra Glide Trike.

I have been involved in the medical field for 32 years. In that time I have been a field medic in the army, a helicopter medic and a nurse working for the Flight Surgeon’s office. Since getting out of the Army I have worked for a fire department in Colorado as a paramedic/firefighter and then as an RN usually working in the Emergency department. Since moving to Florida I have been working in emergency medicine and as the emergency department educator. I recently accepted a position as a manager and have converted from emergency medicine to hospice care.
Throughout my career as a nurse and in the army I have frequently been the educator for whatever outfit I have been associated with. In New York I was a state certified EMS instructor and instituted the first AED program for the volunteers in the state. During this extensive medical career I have always been interested in riding motorcycles and have a number of different bikes over the years. My favorite bike was a 1978 Kawasaki KZ-650, and when I was going to school in Florida to earn my RN degree I rode a gold wing every day. Now I have gotten a real fascination with a Russian Ural motorcycles. My latest bike is a 2010 limited edition bike called the Red October. I look forward to serving the biking community in Central Florida and hope to advance biking safety in our community.

I am a member of 2 motorcycle clubs in my area and am glad to join the ranks of instructors for ASMI. As an EMT-I, I am part of a team that respond to many motorcycle accidents in our area. I believe that education can help people better understand how to help others within their community.

I have been an avid motorcyclist for many years, riding everything from dirt bikes to dual sports to street bikes. I started working at a motorcycle dealership after high school and was informed that if I were to work there I would need to learn how to ride. That was all that it took. The bug bit me. When I was away at college I took the MSF course in Atlanta and have been striving every day to better my skills. I ride every day that I can, even commuting back and forth to my day job. I work as a Mechanical design engineer during the day for the Ultrasonic cleaning division a large corporation. During evenings and weekends I am a lieutenant for my volunteer EMS service in Monroe CT. I have been and EMT since 2000, and have been involved with my EMS service in the form of a driver, MRT, EMT, and driver trainer since 1993.

I worked for the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, workers’ compensation, for 27 years and retired in 2002. While working for the State, I did a lot of teaching at seminars, conventions, and in-house classes. I found I really like to teach. I have been riding for 11 years and have been an MSF certified instructor since 2005. I attended the Women’s Motorcycle Conferences in 2002, in Buckhannon, West Virginia and in 2006, in Athens, Georgia. I attended the ASMI breakout class and found it to be extremely informative and am looking forward to teaching many people this valuable information.

Tyke Barham has been riding motorcycles since his first dirt bike around the age of 10 or 11. He started by racing dirt bikes locally in the Greensboro, NC area in the early 70s, and over the years has owned motorcycles of all makes and models. After a brief hiatus (the “obligatory” break to raise his family, acquiring a pilot’s license along the way), he started back into motorcycling with a Honda CBR 650, then an ’81 Ironhead Sportster, and a series of touring bikes before his current ride – a 2008 Harley-Davidson Road Glide. Tyke has been involved with teaching the Bystander Assistance Classes since 2000 and welcomes every opportunity to share this knowledge with other motorcyclists across the country. I am the Emergency Medical Services Coordinator at Morgan Community College, 920 Barlow Road in Fort Morgan, CO. My EMS career began in 1980 when, having taken an EMT class in Byers Colorado where I was a Vocational Agriculture Instructor, I moved to Wiggins, CO. When it was known that I was an EMT Basic, I was asked to consider joining Morgan County Ambulance Service. My career there started in October of 1980 and continued until 2010 when I retired from active ambulance service work.
I teach the on- campus EMT Basic, IV, ITLS, CPR and First Aid courses for MCC and coordinate the EMS course offerings off- campus in the 11,500 square mile service area for MCC. This encompasses an area from Ft. Morgan east to Wray, south to Burlington, west through Limon to Bennett and back to Ft. Morgan. I also coordinate the on- campus courses such as EMT Intermediate, ACLS, PALS, and others.
I have been a member of ABATE of Colorado since 2003 and currently serve as Northeast Regional Coordinator and Assistant State Coordinator for ABATE of Colorado and a member of District One in northeast Colorado. I have been an ASMI lead instructor since 2008 and believe all motorcyclists should have this training to know how to properly handle an injured motorcyclist and the accident scene.

I’ve been a rider for 12 years …learned on a Honda Rebel and now ride a Street Glide. I’ve been CPR and First Aid certified for almost 14 years …needed to be as the Leader of my daughter’s Brownie Troop! I’m married to George who’s a Certified RiderCoach for the CMSP and have 2 grown children, 4 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 fish. Our son Andrew was in a bike accident in November 2002 …spent 18 days in a coma, broken femur and wrist, brain stem injuries – lucky for us that the accident was right in front of our local hospital and EMT’s were on the scene within minutes. If the accident had happened anywhere else, with no one nearby trained to help, we know we would have lost him.George and I own and live at Valley V-Twin, a motorcycle dealership in Indio, CA. I am a member of the AMA, Sustaining Member of the MRF & Lifetime HOG member. We’ve brought the ASMI classes to our area because we are dedicated to promoting rider training, rider safety, and motorcycle awareness in the State of California – including organizing an annual Motorcycle Awareness Month event every year for the last 4 years – helping others learn what to do in the aftermath of a motorcycle accident just fits in! Becoming an Assistant Instructor was an obvious next step. I look forward to sharing my knowledge, training, and experience with you!

Hi loving life by riding and I enjoy riding with many organizations, disorganizations, and solo. In late 2007, as a Rider Educator working on a GWTA newsletter article, I realized the need for First Response & trained Bystanders, “specifically trained motorcyclists, for motorcyclists” as reported by NTSHA, DOT, and NAMS. Through some Internet searches, found ASMI, looked at their offerings and took the Basic class at the next opportunity. During that class I realized that I had to become more involved in ASMI, and became an assistant instructor. What a wonderful program ASMI has put together in the Basic “Crash Course.” Vital information in a well thought out curriculum with enjoyable classes. I love to share my passion for ASMI’s classes and truly believe we make the whole motorcycle community a little safer with each trained bystander. Encourage everyone, rider, co-rider, family, and friends to consider this trauma focused course. My passion is to make the ASMI course fun with true meaning.

Hello, my interest in riding began at 8 years old when the wind first slapped my face and the rubber chewed the dirt! Oh Baby, what a thrill! It was love on the first roll out. My husband, Al, and I have been riding together for more than 28 years. We are members of GWRRA, GWTA and Patriot Guards. You’ll find us participating in numerous community and charity rides like Toys for Tots, House of Ruth, Boys and Girls Club, Rolling Thunder and many more.
I began my health care education with CPR and First Aid certification more than 25 years ago. Now I am a Registered Nurse with Pediatric and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification. As a nurse working in a busy ER in Ventura County, I have seen multiple motorcycle injuries. The severity of some injuries may have been reduced or avoided if immediate trauma care was activated on scene. Al, as a former Rider Educator for GWTA, and I recognize the need for trauma awareness among all riders and bystanders. Embracing the ASMI mission statement to improve the outcome of motorcyclist injuries, while maintaining the safety of everyone at the scene, ASMI marries our wish to help educate fellow riders in motorcycle specific trauma and bystander assistance.
I’ve lived in Southern California for more than 30 years. I am proud to be among the first ASMI instructors in California. Willing to travel anywhere a group wishes to learn what ASMI has to offer. Willing to work with special needs riders. Ask us about fund raising for your organization. We look forward to working with you and your group.

I have been riding motorcycles for about 37 years. Since moving to Arizona in 1990, I’ve enjoyed the year round riding weather. I’ve been a registered nurse for almost as long as I’ve been riding. Most of my clinical experience has been in Critical Care, including three years as nurse educator, and more recently as program manager for women’s health. I had the honor of serving on the Arizona Governor’s Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council for three years. While on the Council I attended a SMSA conference in Texas went to an ASMI breakout session. The information presented was extremely valuable. So, I thought becoming an ASMI instructor seemed to be the best way to combine all my experience and share what I’ve learned with others to promote motorcycle safety. I continue as a member of ABATE of Arizona since 1996, having held almost every officer position at least once.
