We Went Into Action Using Our Training

Last Sunday my friend and I were out riding in Southern Wisconsin just off Hwy 50 on CTH W. We came over a small rise in the road and then it came to a fork in the road. A biker had crashed just before we got there. It appeared he was going too fast to make the turn and high sided on the left side of the bike. He and his passenger both went down on the road hitting their heads. Both pair of glasses were on the area of impact. We went into action using our training that we had taken a year earlier. Christine went to the driver and checked him out, no broken bones but a lot of road rash. A passerby that saw the crash happen and was holding his shirt on the man’s head to help slow the bleeding. Christine got all of the vital info (located on the PACT card), asked the right questions, and gave all the information to the police when they arrived.

Meanwhile I went over to the passenger who was his wife. She was unresponsive at first and then went in and out of consciousness. We did not have our trauma kit with us (we will not forget again), but thankfully the next car that stopped had gloves as she was an EMT. The passenger did complain of head and shoulder pain…you could hear it when they loaded her up! The responders got there within minutes and it was clear that they were in good hands!

When we took the ASM class I hoped that I would not have to use it but the training that Vicki’s staff at ASM gave us was invaluable!!! Every place I go I tell folks about the training and encourage them to take it. We did put our new skills to task that day. Thanks, Vicki, for putting the information out there and to all of the instructors who teach!
